The 2027 Volvo EX60 arrives with an innovative Multi-Adaptive Safety Belt® that actually reads your body and adjusts its response. TIME magazine named this Swedish engineering breakthrough one of 2025’s Best Inventions, and it debuts exclusively in this upcoming electric SUV. For the second year running, Volvo earned recognition for pushing automotive safety into genuinely new territory, and we have all the details at Volvo Cars Silver Spring.
TIME Recognizes Volvo’s Safety Leadership
TIME’s annual list puts 300 groundbreaking inventions in the spotlight each year. The Multi-Adaptive Safety Belt® earned its place alongside innovations in medicine, energy, and technology. Traditional seat belts deliver the same restraint force no matter who wears them or what’s happening on the road. Volvo’s system processes real-time crash data and individual body measurements to customize protection in milliseconds. The technology builds on decades of research from Volvo’s Safety Centre, where engineers have studied real-world crashes since 1970. Last year, Volvo’s Driver Understanding System® in the EX90 received the same honor.
Intelligence That Reads Driver and Road
Interior and exterior sensors feed the belt system data about your height, weight, body shape, and where you sit. During a severe crash, someone with a larger frame receives stronger restraint to prevent head injuries. A smaller person in a moderate collision gets gentler restraint to protect their ribs. The system makes these calculations instantly based on physics and human anatomy. Åsa Haglund, head of Volvo Cars Safety Centre, said the goal is to reduce injuries by tailoring protection to each person rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.
Protection That Grows Smarter
Software updates delivered over the air keep improving how the system works. As Volvo collects data from real-world driving, the 2027 Volvo EX60 gets better at understanding different body types and crash scenarios. Think of it as combining 97 years of Swedish safety engineering with artificial intelligence that learns. The fully electric SUV made its global debut Jan. 21, 2026, during a live event streaming from Stockholm.
