Much has been written about Volvo Cars’ ambitious Drive-E initiative, which plans for every new Volvo car to have an electric motor from the 2019 model year onwards. This revolutionary step, which will see the Volvo brand become the first automaker to abandon the century-old internal combustion engine, has been well received in all corners of society. Recently, the United Nations gave the Drive-E platform special recognition in the most recent report from the UN’s Global Compact (the world’s biggest corporate sustainability project).
In addition to recognizing the Drive-E initiative as a major driver towards accomplishing the UN’s sustainable development goals, the UN cited Volvo Cars as one of the Global Compact’s LEAD members – a group of companies whose commitment to sustainability is particularly impressive. Volvo Cars’ position within the Global Compact is an important one: out of the Compact’s 9,500 members, there are only 44 LEAD companies, just two of which are automakers.
As to the specifics of the Drive-E initiative, phase one will see Volvo Cars release five 100% electric vehicles between model years 2019 - 2021. Two of these vehicles will be Polestar performance cars and three will be Volvo models. The models have yet to be confirmed, but it’s not beyond possibility that Volvo Cars Silver Spring will feature a 2019 Volvo XC60 near Silver Spring, MD.
After the debut of the first five models there will be a consistent phasing-in of various plug-in hybrid and “standard” hybrid options for every Volvo model, building towards one of the auto world’s most diverse electrified car rosters.
